This was an absolute gem of a tour, based in four very different but equally fascinating towns, with lots of little treasures interspersed between these main bases – the fishing boat trip, the Gaudi house, the older-than-the-Taj-Mahal restaurant and winery in Rioja country, the stunning rock formations on the beach at Playa Catedrais, the charming little French town of Bayonne – providing new delights on a daily basis. This was a trip for the ages. Everything was near perfect. First, a shout-out to our fellow travelers! What an amazing and wonderful group of people! The towns we visited had such interesting and painful histories. We really came to appreciate who the Spanish people were over the course of the trip. Such resiliency in the face of great challenges. A highlight was our local guide Marco. Read More...
Amber Road Tours does not disappoint. Our tour guide Enrique’s pride in and historical knowledge of his country was truly outstanding. I would love to see the rest of Spain. Enrique provided so many personal touches like our amazing afternoon at the Prado Museum. The hotels were great and each meal was a feast. We had a good balance between guided expeditions and free time. I appreciate the small group experience. This was, indeed, a cultural journey!
This was my first Amber Road Tour and I suspect it won’t be my last. I was impressed by the well crafted itinerary: a thoughtful balance of group activities and free time. I especially enjoyed the expert tour guides, the Moorish palaces, the Andalusian horses (my favourite) and the Flamenco dancers. Read More...
Having loved my trips in central and southern Spain, I was curious to explore the north. It turns out that this verdant, hilly region is a wonderfully handsome and unspoiled part of the country; the mass tourism that afflicts many beauty spots elsewhere in Spain is yet to arrive. Read More...
After 4 trips with Amber Road to Italy and Sicily we decided to expand our horizons and take an excursion to Andalucia Spain. There is much to see and do in this part of the world and thanks to Sean Rentana, our passionate and knowledgable guide, the experience was taken to another level. Read More...
We had a wonderful time on our tour of Central Spain. 9/26-10/6. Our tour guide Enrique was personable, very knowledgeable, and accommodating. When Jim and I landed at the Madrid Airport on 9/26/23 at 6:30 am only one of our suitcases arrived. It was the largest one of our two and packed with all my clothes , shoes, etc. Read More...
What a fantastic tour, start to finish! This was our second time in Spain (Catalonia, 2010) and our third Amber Road tour. We loved Andalucia – Granada, Malaga, Cádiz, Cordoba, Seville, Ronda. So many unique experiences: tours of the Alhambra, cooking paella, central markets, the Equestrian center, bull farm, etc. we’re not sure how our guide, Sean, had such complete control of the weather… nearly two weeks of warm, beautiful, cloudless days! Spotlight on Spain
To say that Spain is enchanting would be an understatement.
Considered one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, Spain inherently boasts a multitude of breathtaking topography. The landscape changes are dramatic and one doesn’t have to travel far to witness these sharp contrasts. The rainy and lush green mountains in the North can quickly transform to the arid dry climate of Castilla La Mancha or the beautiful sandy beaches of Andalucia.
Perhaps it is the combination of the country’s scenic landscape complemented by its jaw dropping architecture that travelers find the most profound. A stunning canvas dotted with the brilliant jewels of Madrid’s Royal Palace, Segovia’s Roman aqueducts, Gaudi’s cathedral in Barcelona or Granada’s Moorish palace, the Alhambra. White villages jut out from the hillside and sparkle in the sun. Cathedrals soar in the skyline like north stars that can be seen in the distance along any highway or small town. Iconic windmills from Don Quixote’s stories line the hillsides just outside Toledo.
The country’s early establishment and colonization make it relatable to most any traveler. Spanish influence can be seen in many aspects of modern day civilization and most travelers can find a bit of Spain back at home. Spanish Royalty left it’s mark on the world early when Queen Isabella funded Columbus’s voyage to the new world and is responsible for so much of what we have come to know today.
Spanish Gastronomy is world class. Famous chefs like Jose Andes or Feran Andria may have put Spain on the map in the culinary world but it has long since been considered a mecca for food and wine lovers alike. Whether you are in a tapas bar or in a Michelin star restaurant your taste buds will not be disappointed. Spain takes great pride in the quality of even the most simple ingredients. The Spanish love to eat and drink and the long running joke that “there is a bar on every corner” rings true in most cities and towns across the country.
The Spanish are passionate, proud and patriotic. Nothing quite captures that emotion better than seeing a performace of the national dance, Flamenco or perhaps attending a futbol match to cheer on Spain’s national team, La Roja.
Family traditions run strong and there is still a focus on quality time with loved ones. “La comida” (the lunch at 2pm) is an important time to gather and be with family. The slowed down pace and siesta can still be found in most towns and cities.
Here the emphasis is on living in the present and enjoying the good things in life.
